BONNE ANNEE Step by Step Part 1 Pencils

Here's a look behind how we made our Holiday Card for this year.

Original art ending up being humongous. I started it out on 13" x 19" Strathmore 500 2 Ply Bristol board but I ended up having to add more paper so the final art is 20 x 19 inch.

Drawing the art with Col Erase Light Blue Pencil and Staedtler HB Lead.

Decided to change the pose slightly so the left hand was feeding the apple to the horse.

And brought the main character's legs closer together as I remembered I was drawing a dress not jodhpurs

Refining the main character

Wanted to nail down the dress and cape with messing up the drawing so did it on tracing paper so I could be nice and loose...

Traced off the dress and cape and began adding little details - necklace, stars belt etc.

Finish the dress and the the ground the horse is standing on.

Finishing up the horse - which way is the wind blowing, btw?

X-MEN 21 Cover - Step by Step Part 1 - LINEART

Here's a look behind the making of the cover to X-Men #21 from Marvel Comics - out in stores now!

The idea behind this cover was a Drew Struzan Movie Poster type cover - epic space theme with Rachel front and center!

The sketch was drawn at 2x3 inches in my sketchbook in pencil and pen and then cleaned up and colored in Photoshop.

After getting appr0val from Marvel Editor Daniel Ketchum I moved on to pencils..

Here's my initial rough stab at the pencils.

Pencils  drawn in Light Blue and
HB lead on 12 x 18 Bristol Board.

Final pencils.

For solicitation there wasn't time to ink the cover so I colored my pencils.

For the final version - Rachel Dodson inks

Rachel uses Windsor Newton Series 7 Kolinsky Sable #2 Brush and Higgins Black Magic Ink to ink the covers with.

Then scan and clean in Photoshop

Death of Wolverine #1 Variant Cover Step by Step Part 2 COLOR

This is how we made the variant cover to Death of Wolverine #1 Cover art.

And so the colors…

I use  Photoshop CS3 and a Wacom Cintiq 13HD to color with.

Initial rough in
of the colors - getting the midtone values/colors of the characters in and the Gradient Tool for the Background

Just using a big pencil and a little lasso and gradient to move to the next layer of color.

As I get closer to getting the coloring where I want it - I begin converting the lineart to color lines.

Final touches include more texture into the Background face.
