Creating BOMBS AWAY! A Terry Dodson Sketchbook Collection Cover Art Part 2 Color

The cover to my new sketchbook!

BOMBS AWAY!

A Terry Dodson Sketchbook Collection

There is a 4 page sequence in sketchbook on "How I created the Cover Art", but here's another look!

PART 2

COLOR

FLATS

The first stage of color is called flats - flatting allows me to choose an area to color at any point throughout the coloring process.

INITIAL ROUGH IN

I rough in the colors on the figure and in this case start designing the colors for the bike. I also start designing the background of the
cover and setting the type.

DESIGN

I’m not thrilled with how this is reading, not enough “POP”, so I set the figure off against and a WHITE background and VOILA!

I also move the titles around and begin doing some tweaks to the bike itself.

The first thing I did is to change the cirlcle to orange to POP the rider a bit more. Next, I strengthened the bike colors.

REAL COLORING!

Then I start working away from the middle values by adding darks then lights to the figure and the bike.

CIRCLES

To accentuate the fun feel, I add the circles which I incorporate onto the back cover and interior.

COLORING THE LINE ART

The final touch is converting the black line art into colors lines - note the face especially!

PART 1

The book debuted at Emerald City Comic Co  and available world wide soon and in my SHOP!

This collects highlights from last 3 years of my personal sketchbooks in a 32 page soft cover published by Flesk Publications!

It’s a comfortable 6" W x 8.25” with folded flap on front and back cover and a nice spot on page 1 to get a personalized sketch!
