Thanks to all who inquired, I will notify the first 20 by 9 Pacific Time on the 2oth.
Send an email titled NYCC SKETCH, through my contact link at www.terrydodsonart.com or to terry at terrydodsonart dot com (my usual web contact) letting me know the following information:
SIZE
9” x 12” or 11” x 14".
I will do a full figure or 3/4 figure depending on what works best for the composition on the 11" x 14",
and likely it will be 3/4 or thigh up figure on the 9" x 12"
I do the sketches on
Color Canson MiTeinte Pastel paper
with Red Col Erase Pencil, Copic Warm Grey Pens, Black Markers, and Prismacolor White Pencil or Pro White
IF you want your sketch in your SKETCHBOOK, just gauge the size to the 9 x 12 or 11 x 14. However, I won't be able to do many as I won't have the SKETCHBOOK until I'm at the Convention.
See below for sketch examples and visit my blog, Instagram, Deviant Art and Twitter for more examples.
I’m not taking Blank Cover Pre-Show requests, I will decide at the show if I’m going to be able to do any there.
SUBJECT
A Single character and I decide if it needs a background but you are welcome to suggest.
Be clear as to what version of the character you want.
And you can list a top 3 of if you want to.
As you will be picking this up in person from me at NYCC, I need this. To be fair, and for my sanity, and yours, I’m only taking requests from people actually attending NYCC.
-------NITTY GRITTY-------
-To be fair, and for my sanity, and yours, I’m only taking requests from people actually attending NYCC.
-I will take the first 20 COMMISSIONS requested via email and then CLOSE the list. I will then pick the SUBJECT I want to draw. As I complete them, I will contact you to let you know your piece was chosen, it's done, and request a partial payment via Paypal ($100) to hold, and then remainder in CASH from you at the show at the time of pick up.
-Once I stop the list, I will announce it is CLOSED and then I will let the 20 know they are on the list. If you don’t hear within 24 hours of CLOSED then your request was not one of the first 20. I will continue picking sketches until the start of the show so everyone should know.
-SO, not everyone will get a sketch and there will most likely be some confusion so read everything carefully and if you don’t hear from me with 24 hours of closing the list, you are NOT on the list of 20.
-If you do make the list of 20, you are NOT guaranteed a sketch, just that I’m choosing from those 20.
- It’s only when I email with the 2nd email and tell you your sketch is completed, request partial payment, then, you know, … it’s done :-)
I will do as many as possible!
QUESTIONS!

LINE ART
Final Art
Rachel Dodson inks directly over my pencils...
Rachel inks with a Windsor Newton Series 7 Kolinsky Sable #2 Brush and Dr. Martens Hi Carb Ink.
Cool to see how she makes the grey using feather lines...
Using whites in the black areas to create depth
Artwork is scanned into Photoshop at 800dpi Gray full size. I then go in and convert to Bitmap and clean to prepare for....

Captain Marvels Step by Step Part 1 Pencils
Part 1 of the Step by Step making of the cover art for Generations The Bravest 1 featuring the Captains! -
PENCILS
COVER SKETCH
The cover concept I sent into Marvel Comics for approval.
Roughs were drawn at 2" x 3" in my sketchbook using Warm Grey Copics then colored in Photoshop CS3.
INITIAL PENCILS
Drawn in Light Blue on 12" x 18" Bristol Board
Quickly roughed in the drawing making sure the composition still help.
I draw with Col Erase Light Blue Pencil and Staedtler HB Lead Pencil.
Since I'm happy with my rough in I go to "tight" (ink-able) pencils.
The tracing paper is there to keep the drawing clean while I finish Captain Marv-Ell
Detail
For yucks, pretty close...
Just about done...
And the final pencils, all ready for Rachel Dodson to ink...

Harley Quinn Deluxe Book 1 Step by Step Part 3 Color
Here's the Harley Quinn Deluxe Book 1 Cover Art!
By Rachel Dodson and Me.
Out now from DC Comics.
FLATS
The first stage of color is called flats - flatting allows me to choose an area to color at any point throughout the coloring process.
I try to adjust the colors to their medium value or imprimatura - I use this as the starting point for the piece.
INITIAL COLOR (ROUGH IN)
I colored this on my Cintiq 22 HD using Photoshop CS3 .
Here I rough in quickly all the medium lights and darks on the figures and cast initial shadows.
I colored this on my Cintiq 22 HD using Photoshop CS3 .
Here I rough in quickly all the medium lights and darks on the figures and cast initial shadows.
Using the Pencil Tool at 100% to knock those in.
I also used the Gradient tool to give variation form warm red to cool red in Harley's costume.
ADDITIONAL ROUGH IN
I went on the rest of the figure and face and knocked the next lights and darks using the pencils tooling at 70-80%.
I go to the next level of darker darks and lighter lights
COLORING THE LINE ART
This is the icing on the cake step of the process.
I used a previous Harley I colored to "cheat" on the line colors since I already figured it out once...
