Here's a look at a Harley Quinn sketch I did at Rose City Comic Con, September 11th, 2016.

Here's a look behind making the cover of RED ONE #3 - Step by Step Part 2 COLORS

FLATS

The first stage of color is called flats - flatting allows me to choose an area to color at any point throughout the coloring process.

I did the flats this one myself so at this stage I go and adjust the colors to their medium value or imprimatura - I use this as the starting point for the piece. 

At this point I knew what colors I wanted so it was a matter of rendering from here on out.

Initial Rough In

I colored this on my Cintiq 22 HD using Photoshop CS3 .

Used the Pencils Tool at 100% and roughed in the initial dark values on the flesh tones.

Begin converting Line Art to Color.

I almost always start with the fleshes...

FINAL COLORS

I add the final highlights to the flesh, so minor Gradient Tool and Line Art coloring to the bike.

Highlights on the goggles on the Top Layer and you can see the coloring on the suit's black lines.

And I how pictured the cover all along.

This is what I sent to the Image Comics Production Manager and Whiz Kid Jonathan Chan!

Here's a look behind making the cover of RED ONE #3!

What my desk looked like for drawing the RED ONE #3 cover.

INITIAL PENCILS

Drawn in Light Blue and HB lead on 12" x 18" Bristol Board .

I roughed in the motorcycle in on tracing paper.

At this point I scan in to look at the drawing for errors on the computer.

Next to nail down the bike -

Photo Ref

 I had Rachel take photos of a 1969 Honda R90 motorcycle.

Going to finishes on hair and mask and working my way down the illustration.

You see all that redraw on the motorcycle? It turns out the motorcycles I typically draw for Vera are bigger 250cc bikes and I kept trying to make my photo ref of the 90cc moto work and beefing up the engine, etc. I couldn't understand why I was having so tough a time drawing ... wrong ref!

I ended up just making do and compromising between the bike I wanted and the photo ref. You can see the foot isn't as finished as I like but I lost SO much time reworking the bike that I needed to get Rachel inking this...

                                 Here's Rachel Dodson's initial inks.

Rachel uses Windsor Newton Series 7 Kolinsky Sable #2 Brush and Higgins Black Magic Ink to ink the covers with.

On one of Rachel's breaks I finished up the leg details.

Star Wars 22 Cover Step by Step Part 2 COLOR

So, here's a look at how we made the Star Wars #22 Mile High Comics Scout Trooper Variant Cover!

Part 2

COLOR

The first stage of color is called flats - flatting allows me to choose an area to color at any point throughout the coloring process.

Flats were done by Gilly Renk.

Initial Rough In

I colored this on my Cintiq 22 HD using Photoshop CS3 .

First thing I do is use the Paint Bucket tool to adjust all the colors to the palette I'm using.

Then I rough in the initial darks. I used the Pencil tool at 100%.

Intermediate Stage

Added more lights and darks with the Pencil tool. And began adding variation in the shadows to show the environment of where the Scout Trooper is (not just in a sterile studio...) Lassoing and using the Gradient in the background.

Finally, used a Custom Texture Brush to add detail to trees and "dirt" on trooper.

Finishing up

Coloring Line Art

At this point I like to color the line art... especially the interior edges and the edges facing the strongest light. Of course, I lose as much of the line as possible - especially as I move away from the "camera".
