Now for Part 3 of the Step by Step -

COLOR

FLATS

The first stage of color is called flats - flatting allows me to choose an area to color at any point throughout the coloring process.

I try to adjust the colors to their medium value or imprimatura - I use this as the starting point for the piece. 

BACKGROUND 

I decide on all the tile colors at this point so I can color "off" them. 

Initial Color Rough In

I colored this on my Cintiq 13 HD using Photoshop CS3 .

Here I rough in quickly all the medium lights and darks on the figures and cast initial shadows.

Using the Pencil Tool at 100% to knock those in.

I continue using the Pencil tool -

But at a variety of % from 50- 100 hitting the medium lights and darks over the imprimatur color.

Now to get those colors nailed down on the background I figured out this pattern.

COLORING LINE ART

Starting to color the line art - mostly the face and some of the rim lighting.

Rachel inks over my pencils with a Windsor Newton Series 7 Kolinsky Sable #2 Brush and Dr. Martens Hi Carb Ink to ink the covers with.

 I love how Rachel makes my grays.

That's all #2 brush!

Boot turned out really nice!

There's no white out on this, just Rachel's patiently inking!

Artwork is scanned into Photoshop at 800dpi Gray full size. I then go in and convert to Bitmap and clean to prepare for....

COVER SKETCH

The cover concepts I sent into Marvel Comics Editors Wil Moss and Daniel Ketchum for approval.

At this I was thinking of cropping in on the X-Men and having the Inhumans be full figure but both I and the editors liked the full figure pose - so the wheels were in motion!

Roughs were drawn at 2" x 3" in my sketchbook using Warm Grey Copics then colored in Photoshop CS3.

Initial Pencils

Drawn in Light Blue and HB lead on 12" x 18" Bristol Board 

Quickly roughed in the drawing making sure the composition still help.

I printed out my rough in light blue on the paper to ensure the composition was positioned correctly.

I knew Emma's face and look would pull this piece off, so tried to nail that first.

Working in the positioning of the hands and feet.

No real changes on the face, began figuring out and finishing this version of Emma's costume.

Finalizing the artwork before spotting the blacks.
