He-Man and the Masters of the Universe #1 She-Ra Variant Cover Step by Step

Here's how I created the Variant Cover of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe #1 featuring She-Ra.
First off, the sketches I submitted for approval. All drawn in my sketchbook at about 3" x 5" and colored in Photoshop.
The pencil version drawn on 13 x 19 " Bristol board with light blue and HB Lead.

Rachel Dodson's inks over my pencils using a #2 Windson Newton Sable Brush and Acrylic Black Ink.
Flats created for the cover to begin the color stage in Photoshop.
Intermediate stage of colors - established all the midtones and started rendering.
All the fx and final cleanup.

Lot of fun doing this cover, hope to enjoyed seeing how it was made!

Songes Tome 2 Page 10 Step by Step

Here's how I made Songes Tome 2 Page 10.

The first step is alway the storyboard - tease any problems in the translation - and  for the writer, Denis-Pierre Filippi, to approve before I draw the pages. The storyboards are done at 3 x 4 " on 8.5 x 11" paper with Blue and HB Pencil, Pitt Pens and Copic Markers.

Here's the beginning stage of the pencils.

Here's the scan of the pencils.

Drawn on 13 x 19" 2 ply Bristol Board with Blue and HB Lead and borders ruled with .80 tech pen. So I shoot from these the pencils so they are very tight (for me)!

The lineart is darkened and cleaned in Photoshop and turned into a Bitmap.

The colors were done by Rebecca Rendon and me in Photoshop. The art was colored in Channels - a method I learned from Alex Sinclair.

Songes Tome 2 Page 29 Step by Step

Here's how I made Songes Tome 2 Page 29.
To ease any problems in the translation, I do storyboards for the writer, Denis-Pierre Filippi to approve before I draw the pages. This is the storyboard for Songes Tome 2 Page 29. The storyboards are done at 3 x 4 " on 8.5 x 11" paper with Blue and HB Pencil, Pitt Pens and Copic Markers.

Here's the lineart - into the Aladdin, 1001 Nights, etc - fun stuff to draw and create.
Drawn on 13 x 19" 2 ply Bristol Board with Blue and HB Lead and borders ruled with .80 tech pen. So I shoot from these the pencils so they are very tight (for me)! I actually had to draw the FULL BLEED in the  Top LEft on an additional piece of paper.

The lineart is darkened and cleaned in Photoshop and turned into a Bitmap.

The colors were done by Rebecca Rendon and me in Photoshop. The art was colored in Channels - a method I learned from Alex Sinclair.

Pretty layed a warm orange over the entire page and then added and subtracted to that to get that "harem" feel.

X-Men #1 Cover Step by Step

This is process of how I/we created the cover for Marvel's new comic X-Men #1 featuring all the X-Ladies - Storm, Rogue, Kitty Pryde, Psylocke, Rachel Grey and Jubilee! Lots of fun to work on!

I was given the assignment to simply put all 6 characters of the cover and so I did a sketch with almost all the characters prominent at one point or another. Marvel chose A.

The pencils were drawn with light blue and HB lead on 13 x19 " Bristol Board. Loved drawing the MOHAWK Storm!

Rachel Dodson's inks were done over my pencils - she used a Windsor Newton Series 7 Kolinsky Sable Brush #2 and Black Magic Ink.

She knocked it out of the park on this one!

Here are the final colors for this done in Photoshop CS3 using my trusty 11 year old Wacom Intuos Graphics Tablet!

My favorite parts to color - Jubilee's cheeks and bubble!

The book ships in April 2013 by amazling talented Brian Woods and Olivier Coipel - can't wait!

Spider-Men #3 Cover Step by Step

This is the variant cover to last summer's 3rd issue of the crossover miniseries "Spider-Men" featuring Spider-Man and Ultimate Spider-Man and Gwen Stacy. Lots of fun to work on!
These are the roughs I sent in to Marvel for their approval - I knew from the start what I wanted to so you see very little change from rough to final which is nice for expediency!
Here is the pencil version of the cover drawn on 11 x 17 Bristol Board with Light Blue Prismacolor and HB Pencil.
Rachel Dodson's inks over my pencils - she used a Windsor Newton Series 7 Kolinsky Sable Brush #2  and a croquille pen.
Here are my initial and final colors for this done in Photoshop CS3 using my trusty 11 year old Wacom Intuos Graphics Tablet!
And how it looked when printed!
