Civil War #0 Captain Marvel Variant Cover Step by Step Part 2 Color

Variant cover art Rachel Dodson and I did for Civil War II #0.

FLATS

The first stage of color is called flats - flatting allows me to choose an area to color at any point throughout the coloring process.

Generally, I hire someone to do this for me - a "flatter".

At this stage I go and adjust the colors to their medium value or imprimatura - I use this as the starting point for the piece. - the first part of coloring.

Based off my sketch, I knew almost exactly what I was going to do with one...

Detail

This is one is practically done at this stage!

INITIAL COLORS

I colored this on my Cintiq 22 HD using Photoshop CS3 after I scanned the original line art.

Used a big Pencil to rough in at 100% of color then used lower % to work to add lighter and darker values. AND the Gradient tool to break up the flat background.

I used big "CUTS" with the lasso tool and filled with Paintbuckeft on Iron Man - really happy with that

Detail

I keep it pretty loose and basic

COLORING LINEART

Converting Lineart to Color.

Adding Reflective color - either using my Pencil or Lassoing and Gradient.

General cleanup and smoothing using % low of Pencil and Gradient...

Detail

Monkeyed with the no-no finger...

My workspace

Just 3 layers for this one - pretty simple...

Civil War #0 Captain Marvel Variant Cover Step by Step Part 1 Line Art

And how we made the art!

Pretty simple concept

Captain Marvel V Iron Man - and as I love Captain Marvel I had her being "attacked" by Iron Man!

Marvel requested Iron Man head in background - no problem!

Roughs were drawn at 2" x 3" in my sketchbook using Warm Grey Copics then colored in Photoshop CS3.

Initial Pencils drawn in Light Blue and HB lead on 11" x 17" Bristol Board

Observant readers will notice I assumed pose and attitude to her first appearance in Astonishing Spider-Man #8 which I drew 3-4 years ago...

I scanned in the pencils, roughed in the Iron Man head and then traced off on my trusty Huion Light Table - which I love!!!

Guardians of the Galaxy #1 Variant Cover

This is the Guardians of the Galaxy#1 variant cover for Maximum Comics.
Here's the cover sketches I submitted to Marvel - actually had no shortage of ideas for this one - wanted to draw all of them.
Drawn in my sketchbook with pencils and pens and the scanned and cleaned up in Photoshop.

Pencils for the cover drawn on 11" x 17" Bristol Board with Light Blue and HB Pencil.

Rachel Dodson's  inks for the cover - using mostly a Windsor Newton Series 7 #2 Sable Brush and Higgins Black Magic Ink.

Here's the colors done in Photoshop CS3 with a Wacom tablet. Still not happy with my solutions for the color - I like bits of what I did but not the whole.
