Emerald City Comicon Wrap

A little post con wrap.

The fans were amazing (and of course the show itself was run extremely well by
Jim Demonakos), and it was CRAZY busy - felt like San Diego - but just comics
and a manageable size. I got to see and chat with a bunch of other pros - there
are so many there and you get a chance to talk to everyone (if you can get away
from you table that is).

It's funny how big cosplay trend has become - Saturday in Seattle felt and looked like Saturday in San Diego - crazy!

And of course, Seattle is a great city to visit - never enough time to see
everything we wanted to. Rachel stuck gum to the gumwall at Pike Place, we had
crumpets at the Crumpet Shop, had breakfast at the Athenian with a view of the
sound, had an amazing doughnut at Top Pot and made it up to Captitol Hill for a
dinner.

The reception to the Seattle Print was better than expected and we sold out
Saturday afternoon - thanks! I will be doing another printing of it, because so
many people wanted and it will be available at future appearances and IF I can
solve shipping problems, available online as well.

I ended up doing 7 commissions. As usual, there wasn't more than 10 minutes of
free time at the show to do the commissions so I ended up having to do them in
the hotel room. I'm starting to post them here .... now!

Didn't have time to see anything else at the con but I was given the new Bruce
Timm Naughty and Nice book (courtesy of the publisher and all around good guy
John Fleskes) and Brittney Lee's book (who did a great little dedication for
Rachel and I) - she was sitting directly across from us and we kept noticing her
art. She's works for Disney Feature Animation and does the prints for fun -
check her out.

Seattle Print

Here's the artwork for my "Seattle" print that I'm producing for my appearance at Emerald City Comicon next week.

Return of Black Cat!

Well, for me to be drawing her anyway!

Black Cat shows up in Defenders #7 and yep that's the cover. Penciled by me, inked by Rachel and colored by me

(just work in progress color for now). Issue 7 ships in June.

Defenders 4 Cover - Start to Finish

Here's a little step by step look at process behind the cover of Defenders # 4 featuring Dr. Strange and a friend..

Step 1 is a little sketch that I send to Marvel for approval - a 5 x 7" marker drawing done in my sketchbook then colored in Photoshop CS3

Step 2 are my pencils drawn in HB Lead on 11 x 17 " Bristol Board

Step 3 Rachel's inks done over the top of my pencils using a #2 Brush and FW Acrylic Ink.

Step 4 art is scanned in and colored in Photoshop with a Wacom Intuos Graphics Tablet.

Step 5 Final pass at coloring after notes from Marvel.

Defenders 3 Cover - Start to Finish

So here's my process for creating the cover to Defenders #3.

First I do a little sketch that I send to Marvel for approval - a 5 x 7" marker drawing done in my sketchbook then colored in Photoshop CS3.

Next, I pencil at 11 x17 on 2 Ply Bristol Board.

Rachel then inks with a brush and ink.

First pass at coloring (in Photoshop).

Final pass at coloring after notes from Marvel.

Voila!

It's been a while - I've had the busiest fall workwise that I can remember - today's the first chance I had to do some online updates.

I have a bunch of cool stuff in the works and that will be coming out in 2012 from the next issues of Defenders, plus new artbooks and sketchbooks, prints and another gallery show plus convention appearances. Updates on all when have exact dates, etc.
Here's a couple of new pieces of art - sneaks peeks of Defenders #5 cover and a couple of panels from Songes Tome 2.

Defenders #2 Cover Art

No New York Comic Convention appearance this year

I'm way too busy with work to take any time off so no more convention
appearances at all until 2012. I will be announcing shows for next year pretty
soon as I'm going through all the invites and deciding what is going to work for
2012.

I will post some new pics up here soon!

San Diego Sketches 8 and 9 Red Queen and Wonder Woman

The final two sketches from SDCC - Red Queen and Wonder Woman. Who better to follow up the White Queen than "The Red Queen". I did the redesign of the Madelyne Pryor Red Queen character back in 2008 and ended only drawing her on 1 page for her first appearance and then Greg Land ended up getting to do all the fun stuff! Drawn on 11 x 14 bristol board with Col Erase Light Blue Pencil, Pitt and Copic Pens, Warm Grey Copic Markers and Prismacolor Pencils.

And the Wonder Woman was done for a fan, who had waited 3+years for a WW sketch, I did it 2 years and missed him at the end of the show. So I drew this Sunday of ComicCon so I could finally get him his WW after 5+ years! Drawn in Light Blue and HB Lead on 11 x 14 Bristol Board.

San Diego Sketches 6 and 7

Here's the next batch of commission sketches from Comic Con International, San Diego, July 2011 - this time it's a Moulin Rouge inspired Emma Frost and an armored girl!

Emma was drawn on a 11 x 17 sketchbook with Col Erase Light Blue Pencil, Pitt and Copic Pens, Warm Grey Copic Markers and Prismacolor Pencils and the other was drawn on 11 x 16 Canson Pastel Paper with Col Erase Light Blue Pencil, Pitt and Copic Pens, Warm Grey Copic Markers and Prismacolor Pencils.

San Diego Comic Con and Sketchbooks UPDATE

WHERE/WHEN

I will be appearing at CCI San Diego, July 20-24 2011 at booth 4706. I will be at the booth most of the show - Rachel won't be there this year - so I will be manning the booth solo!

SIGNING

I will be signing books/comics/statues/etc at my booth the whole show.

COMMISSION SKETCHES

I will take sketch requests at 6:00-7:00 PM Wednesday and 10:00-11:00 AM Thursday.

I will write down the first 50 names HOWEVER I will be choosing myself who's sketch I'm drawing and if you had a sketch recently I won't be doing you a sketch so I can try to get sketches down for fans who I haven't done sketches for!

And San Diego is VERY busy con so I will be producing between 5 and 10 sketches TOTAL.

Sketches are $200 each for a single figure.

SKETCHBOOKS

My new sketchbooks "Reveries" and "Bombshells 5" will be debuting at the show.

"Reveries" will be a 5.5" x 8.5" Full Color sketchbook in a signed and numbered limited edition of 500 copies for $25 each.

"Bombshells 5" will be a 5.5" x 8.5" Full Color sketchbook for $15 each.

I will put a limited number of these on eBay during the show under seller ID - thebombshellter

I will also have a limited number of last year's "Bombshells Book 1".

ORIGINAL ART

I will be selling original art from Uncanny X-Men, Wonder Woman and selected covers, pinups and sketches PLUS some brand new art from Rachel and I!

It features me trying to figure out what I wanted to do with the cover. I knew I was going for an old fashioned poster in the Moulin Rouge, but was playing around with the amount of "action" for the figure, opted for a more stable image - let the "picture" be the action.

It's great to draw stuff besides my assignments and it's great to draw from life. I think drawing what you see when traveling is one of the best ways to "see" things. You really have to study all the details of the subject matter and it's sticks in your head the way no photo can!
