Iron Heart - Riri Williams Sketch Step by Step from Emerald City Comic Con 2017

Here's a Step by Step look at how I created an Iron Heart - Riri Williams - Blank Cover Sketch at Emerald City Comic Con 2017.

Quick rough in with Col Erase Carmine and Scarlet Red Pencil.

Next, I used Copic Warm Grey 1 and 2 pens plus a Pitt Black S pen to "find" the drawing afterward.

I finished up the figure with the Pitt S, then used Copic Warm Grey 3 on the face. Finally, I used the Pitt Big Brush Pen to rough in Riri's Hair!

Moved to rest of figure and helmet with Copics - up to Copic Warm Grey 4 now.

Darkened up some of the line work with a Pitt Black F and accentuated with Copic Warm Grey 6

and added highlights to earrings, face, helmet.

And done!

Leia Sketch Cover Step by Step

A look at how I made this Princess Leia Sketch Cover for  a New York Comic Con fan.

So this is drawn on a blank Star Wars #1 Cover.

I rough in the drawing quickly with a Col Erase Scarlet Red Pencil.

Next, I rough in the initial values from light to dark using Copic Warm Grey Markers 1, 2, and 3.

I like this seat of the pants style of drawing - very much like painting!

Kinda a mess, but that's what I need to start finding the line using a Micron Pigma 02 Black Pen.

Continuing with the line art.

Next, I start using the Copic Warm Grey 4 and 5 to find the darker values.

Finally, I use a Pitt S and F Black Pen to nail down the final drawing plus a Copic Warm Grey 6 for the final darks and a White pen for highlights on the metals, eyes, lips, and nose.

May the force be with you!

Star Wars 21 Cover Step by Step Part 1 Line Art

So, here's a look at how I made the Star Wars #21 Mile High Comics Tie Fighter Pilot Variant!

Get it here from MILE HIGH COMICS

First step is the sketch

The cover concepts I sent into Marvel Comics Editors Heather Antos and Jordan White and Lucasfilm for approval.

Roughs were drawn at 2" x 3" in my sketchbook using Warm Grey Copics then colored in Photoshop CS3.

Ok, this thing had to be done QUICK so inked this myself - meaning I roughed it in quickly then basically drew in ink.

See rough - using Pitt Pens S and Micron 03

Knew I needed to nail the helmet and then could "cruise" from there...

Now, I don't recommend working this way but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do!

Used a Pitt B for the main figure inking plus the Pitt F

Micron 03 for background

I brought in my ace reliever, Rachel Dodson, to fill in the blacks using her brush - looks so nice!

Erased and sent in for initial approval

Wonder Woman Sketch Step by Step

Here's a little look at how I create one of my conventions sketches -  this is a WONDER WOMAN sketch from Comic Con Int'l July 2014.

The sketch is drawn on 11 x16 Canson Mi-Teinte Paper.  I start off with Col Erase Scarlet Red Pencil for an initial rough in and then use a Pitt XS Pen to nail down face details and begin adding value with Copic Warm Grey 1.

I use the thin black pen as it hardly bleeds once I start using the Copic Greys. At this point just more of the same tools contenting the line drawing.

Moving to the next stage of Copic Warm Grey - 2, 3, 4. I just go ahead and draw in the black hair.

I use a White Prismacolor Pencil to add the lights.

Use the Copic Warm Grey 4 6 and 8 to finish the values.

Add the whites to the background to finish the composition.

Add just a little more white to the sword to polish off.
