A View from the Booth - More San Diego Pics

Well, it's always amazing what you see from the booth.

First up, a tattoo from drawing I did for the cover to Marvel Knights Spider-Man #11. Very nicely done!

Next up, a statue made from the drawing I did of Catwoman from Harley Quinn #3. The sculptor is going to send me one. I thought this was pretty cool because I've kept this particular page as I was really happy it.

Finally, it's always a happening scene at the booth with famous celebrities like Captain Morgan, Red Sonja and Indiana Jones just hanging out!

Back from San Diego

Made it back from San Diego late last night. Everything went well and was great to meet so many of you. Scored some cool books and art and managed to get a good dozen sketches done which I will be posting soon - you can see the first two above. I planned to do all my sketches on colored paper with colored pencil and pens like I have done for the last few years but between my house and the con booth I managed to lose the paper! So... I had to improvise and ended up inking all my sketches as doing full pencils for everyone wasn't going to happen. Fortunately my booth mate Aaron Lopresti, had some paper and pens I could borrow for the show.

More later...

Uncanny X-Men #513 Cover Step by Step 4 - Colors 1

So, I start with the flat stage then go through the colors and readjust to the pallette I've chosen for this piece.

As I had a good idea of what the background would look like, I went ahead and rendered it first and since it really defined the rest of the colors it needed to be done first.

Uncanny X-Men #513 Cover Step by Step 3 - Finished pencils

At this point, the drawings were all solid so I went in and spotted blacks and made everything clear for inks.

So I finished off on the left side, Weapon Omega.

Then the Dark Queen, Emma Frost. I've been drawing characters with black costumes for so long, it's always fun to do, but I still try to push myself and make them read even better. I've been doing grey patterns in the black for a long time (these are reflective lights that read as grey on the blacks) that I learned from Michael Golden. Since I've been on Uncanny I changed doing the MG feathering in these reflective greys to a combination of straight lines that blend with cross hatching in to the blacks that Rachel does REALLY well and looks much more natural to my eye.

Finally, cleaned up Charlie and Namor. The final scan is a cleaned up version.

Next ... the inks!
