Flats

The first stage of coloring is to have the art "flatted".

Flatting allows me to choose an area to color at any point throughout the coloring process.

Detail

Initial rough in
of the colors - getting the midtone values/colors of the characters in.

Just using a big pencil tool to rough in the color.

Using the pencil on varying levels of opacity and the lasso/gradient tool to smooth out edges.

And adding secondary light sources and textures.

For the Naboo background, I looked the James Gurney inspired design paintings from the Phantom Menace.

Final touches include adding the darkest and lightest values.

And the icing on the cake is converting the lineart to color lines.
