Star Wars #50 Step by Step Part 3 Color

Our variant cover for Star Wars #50 - out now from Marvel Comics - a family portrait!

Check out how we made it.

PART 3

COLOR

FLATS

The first stage of color is called flats - flatting allows me to choose an area to color at any point throughout the coloring process.

First thing I did was lay an orange color over the whole piece to harmonize the colors and get the "old fashioned movie poster" feel I was going for.

I try to adjust the colors to their medium value or imprimatura - I use this as the starting point for the piece.

INITIAL COLOR (ROUGH IN)

I colored this on my Cintiq 22 HD using Photoshop CS3 .

I rough in quickly all the medium lights and darks on the figures and cast initial shadows.

Using the Pencil Tool (Hard Round pixel Brush) at 100% to to begin and then switch to lower 30-50% to get the right value of color for the next stages of rendering.

RIM LIGHT

I added the yellow rim light to Luke using the Pencils tool at 100%

 GRADIENT and ROSY CHEEKS

Used the Gradient tool to fade out the background

I added Rosy cheeks to Leia

Used the Lasso and Gradient tool to define Leia's jaw line.

COLORING THE LINE ART

This is the icing on the cake step of the process.

I colored a lot of the black lines - notice the lips, flesh outline clothes and SFX in the background.

TOUCHES

Adding an extra layer of depth to Luke's eyes to help them POP.

Star Wars 50 Step by Step Part 2 Inks

Our variant cover for Star Wars #50 - out now from Marvel Comics - a family portrait!

Check out how we made it.

PART 2

LINE ART

Rachel Dodson's initial start on the line art on this cover.

Rachel inks directly over my pencils.

TOOLS

Rachel inks with a Windsor Newton Series 7 Kolinsky Sable #2 Brush and Royal Talens India Ink.

Love how the strap  by Luke's head turned out.

I  love how she creates "grey".

And notice the details on Luke's ventilator tube.

Check out how Rachel makes the explosion details with Pro White.

I inked the ships with Pigma Micron 02 Pen.

I also fudged her eyes a bit with the pen, to make them a bit more Leia-esque...

FINAL LINE ART

Artwork is scanned into Photoshop at 800dpi Gray full size. I then go in and convert to Bitmap and clean to prepare for...

San Diego Comic Con Pre-Show Sketch List Starts at 9am Today!

SDCC COMMISSION SKETCHES

The list is now CLOSED - thanks!

At that time, send an email titled SDCC SKETCH, through my contact link at  www.terrydodsonart.com or to terry at terrydodsonart dot com (my usual web contact) letting me know the following information:

 SIZE

 9” x 12”

 11” x 14"

I will do a full figure or 3/4 figure depending on what works best for the composition on the 11" x 14",

and  likely it will be 3/4 or thigh up figure on the 9" x 12"

I do the sketches on

Color Canson MiTeinte Pastel paper

with Red Col Erase Pencil, Copic Warm Grey Pens, Black Markers, and Prismacolor White Pencil or Pro White

IF you want your sketch in your SKETCHBOOK, just gauge the size to the 9 x 12 or 11 x 14. However, I won't be able to do many SKETCHBOOK commissions as I won't have the SKETCHBOOK until I'm at the Convention.

See below for sketch examples and visit my blog, Instagram, Deviant Art and Twitter for more examples.
I’m not taking Blank Cover Pre-Show requests, I will decide at the show if I’m going to be able to do any there.

 SUBJECT

A Single character and I decide if it needs a background but you are welcome to suggest.

Be clear as to what version of the character you want.

And you can list a top 3 of if you want to.

 YOUR NAME

As you will be picking this up in person from me at SDCC, I need this. To be fair, and for my sanity, and yours, I’m only taking requests from people actually attending SDCC.

-------NITTY GRITTY-------

-To be fair, and for my sanity, and yours, I’m only taking requests from people actually attending San Diego Comic Con.

-I will take the first 20 COMMISSIONS requested via email and then CLOSE the list. I will then pick the SUBJECT I want to draw. As I complete them, I will contact you to let you know your piece was chosen, it's done, and request a partial payment via Paypal ($100) to hold, and then remainder in CASH from you at the show at the time of pick up.

-Once I stop the list, I will announce it is CLOSED and then I will let the 25 know they are on the list. If you don’t hear within 24 hours of CLOSED then your request was not one of the first 20. I will continue picking sketches until the start of the show so everyone should know.

-SO, not everyone will get a sketch and there will most likely be some confusion so read everything carefully and if you don’t hear from me with 24 hours of closing the list, you are NOT on the list of 20.

-If you do make the list of 20, you are NOT guaranteed a sketch, just that I’m choosing from those 20.

- It’s only when I email with the 2nd email and tell you your sketch is completed, request partial payment, then, you know, … it’s done :-)

I will do as many as possible!

QUESTIONS!

Please ask in the thread below so everyone can see - thanks!

GOOD LUCK!
