Defenders #2 Cover Art

Here's a little step by step look at process behind the cover of Defenders #2 featuring Silver Surfer, Dr. Strange, Red She Hulk and Iron Fist.

Step 1 is a little design sketch submitted to Marvel - drawn in my sketchbook and then colored in Photoshop

Step 2 is are my pencils drawn in HB Lead on 11 x 17 " Bristol Board

Step 3 is Rachel's awesome inks done over the top of my pencils using a #2 Brush and FW Acrylic Ink.

Step 4 art is scanned in and colored in Photoshop with a Wacom Intuos Graphics Tablet.

Let me know if you have any questions!

  1. Nice. This turned out great. I'm surprised how little variation there is from the thumbnail to the finished product.

How much freedom do you get for your composition to interact with the title header?

  2. Even the top mock-up image is awesome! Well done Mr. Dodson!

  3. Thanks for sharing these. I always appreciate a peak behind the curtain at the creative process.

  4. I remember you stating somewhere that you usually only submit one design, right? Did you have any other designs you created that you didn't care for?

You have a talent for collage type cover art. Is this a Drew Struzen influence?

Thanks for posting and Happy New Year!
