Defenders 3 Cover - Start to Finish

So here's my process for creating the cover to Defenders #3.

First I do a little sketch that I send to Marvel for approval - a 5 x 7" marker drawing done in my sketchbook then colored in Photoshop CS3.

Next, I pencil at 11 x17 on 2 Ply Bristol Board.

Rachel then inks with a brush and ink.

First pass at coloring (in Photoshop).

Final pass at coloring after notes from Marvel.

Voila!

I hope everyone has a great holiday season and a terrific 2012!

It's been a while - I've had the busiest fall workwise that I can remember - today's the first chance I had to do some online updates.

I have a bunch of cool stuff in the works and that will be coming out in 2012 from the next issues of Defenders, to the long awaited volume 2 of Songes, plus new artbooks and sketchbooks, prints and another gallery show plus convention appearances. Updates on all when have exact dates, etc.

Here's a couple of new pieces of art - sneaks peeks of Defenders #5 cover and a couple of panels from Songes Tome 2.

Defenders #2 Cover Art

Here's a little step by step look at process behind the cover of Defenders #2 featuring Silver Surfer, Dr. Strange, Red She Hulk and Iron Fist.

Step 1 is a little design sketch submitted to Marvel - drawn in my sketchbook and then colored in Photoshop

Step 2 is are my pencils drawn in HB Lead on 11 x 17 " Bristol Board

Step 3 is Rachel's awesome inks done over the top of my pencils using a #2 Brush and FW Acrylic Ink.

Step 4 art is scanned in and colored in Photoshop with a Wacom Intuos Graphics Tablet.

I'm way too busy with work to take any time off so no more convention
appearances at all until 2012. I will be announcing shows for next year pretty
soon as I'm going through all the invites and deciding what is going to work for
2012.

San Diego Sketches 8 and 9 Red Queen and Wonder Woman

The final two sketches from SDCC - Red Queen and Wonder Woman. Who better to follow up the White Queen than "The Red Queen". I did the redesign of the Madelyne Pryor Red Queen character back in 2008 and ended only drawing her on 1 page for her first appearance and then Greg Land ended up getting to do all the fun stuff! Drawn on 11 x 14 bristol board with Col Erase Light Blue Pencil, Pitt and Copic Pens, Warm Grey Copic Markers and Prismacolor Pencils.

And the Wonder Woman was done for a fan, who had waited 3+years for a WW sketch, I did it 2 years and missed him at the end of the show. So I drew this Sunday of ComicCon so I could finally get him his WW after 5+ years! Drawn in Light Blue and HB Lead on 11 x 14 Bristol Board.

San Diego Comic Con and Sketchbooks UPDATE

WHERE/WHEN

I will be appearing at CCI San Diego, July 20-24 2011 at booth 4706. I will be at the booth most of the show - Rachel won't be there this year - so I will be manning the booth solo!

SIGNING

I will be signing books/comics/statues/etc at my booth the whole show.

COMMISSION SKETCHES

I will take sketch requests at 6:00-7:00 PM Wednesday and 10:00-11:00 AM Thursday.

I will write down the first 50 names HOWEVER I will be choosing myself who's sketch I'm drawing and if you had a sketch recently I won't be doing you a sketch so I can try to get sketches down for fans who I haven't done sketches for!

And San Diego is VERY busy con so I will be producing between 5 and 10 sketches TOTAL.

Sketches are $200 each for a single figure.

My new sketchbooks "Reveries" and "Bombshells 5" will be debuting at the show.

"Reveries" will be a 5.5" x 8.5" Full Color sketchbook in a signed and numbered limited edition of 500 copies for $25 each.

It features me trying to figure out what I wanted to do with the cover. I knew I was going for an old fashioned poster in the Moulin Rouge, but was playing around with the amount of "action" for the figure, opted for a more stable image - let the "picture" be the action.

It's great to draw stuff besides my assignments and it's great to draw from life. I think drawing what you see when traveling is one of the best ways to "see" things. You really have to study all the details of the subject matter and it's sticks in your head the way no photo can!

Emerald City Comic Con Sketch 7 - Abbey Chase

Abbey Chase, from the Danger Girl comic book, a convention sketch drawn at Emerald City Comic Con, March 2011.

I think was the first time I had drawn this character, so I tried to pick a really fun scenario.

This was the 7th sketch I did at the convention, but the first not drawn on the colored Canson Pastel Paper I use regularly but on white paper, so I had to readjust how I would have to apply the pencils, black markers and especially the grey value Copic Markers on the fly - but that's fun and challenge of doing con sketches. And it was in a sketchbook and it was only 8.5 x 11".

Original art is drawn in a 8.5 x 11" sketchbook with Col Erase Light Blue Pencil, Staedtler HB Lead, Black Copic Multiliners 05 and 08 Markers, Pitt "XS" "S" "M" Markers, Copic Warm Grey 0-9 Markers, and White and Henna Prismacolors Pencils.

Funny, the fan for who I drew the sketch actually collects sketches with the characters reading! I had no idea, it was a picture I had in my own head for a while and it was a good excuse to draw it!

Always fun to draw, but this one's a little stiff as I had about a million interruptions (which is cool - I'm at the show for the fans!) while drawing the first day of the show and ended up having to finish in the morning before the show the next day.

X-Men #7 Cover Step By Step 4 COLOR 2

Coloring part 2

Step 11- Add the lightning reflecting off the top/back of Spidey. Then added texture to the smoke with my "smoke" brush - just a big texture brush.

On my Line Art layer, I turn Cyclops "power" to red line.

Step 12- FX - On a layer on top of my color and line art layers, I airbrush tool the lightning and the reflective lightning off the top of heads, etc plus some of the smoke.

Also use my smoke brush on the buildings for a little more texture.

On the Line Art layer, I turn Storm's hand and lightning to colored line and where the lightning hits Emma's head and Spidey's legs to colored line as well.

Step 13 - Made lights in the background "glow" and corrected flying rubbish near Wolverine.

Had Spidey's red suit reflect into the shadowed parts of his blue suit.

This is version I sent off to Marvel for solicitations - not the final printed version, that will be next.

Step 7 - Flats- In Photoshop CS5 using a Wacom Graphics Intuos Tablet, I do the flat stage.

Step 8 - Rough in background sky. Then do Storm's Lightning as it's a big element and light source. And start working on Emma and Wolverine.

Step 9 - Adjust the color/temperature of Storm, Cyclops and Spider-Man to fit into the "palette"/"color harmony" I'm using for the cover. Work on Storm - she is wearing a very reflective outfit so I have the lightning really hitting her on the "light side".

Step 10 - Readjust Emma's hair color and start modeling her. Have the back light hit Wolverine. Start coloring Cyclops with both the primary front light and backlight by the lightning.

Next time, knockin' out the line art!

X-Men #7 Cover Step By Step 1

OK, the cover of X-Men #7 featured the X-Men in New York with Spider-Man as the guest. The only other rule I had was to include the "X" logo in the sky.

Step 1 - Working in my sketchbook, I knew just about what I wanted, but I had a couple slight variations in mind. Drawn with Pencil, Pitt and Copic Markers at about 8 x 9".

Step 2 - Scanned that page and in Photoshop rearranged the images to the two versions I had in mind and did a little color versions as well. This is what I sent into Marvel. They chose B.

Step 3 - So went straight to full size 13 x 19" Strathmore 2 ply bristol board and using Col Erase Light Blue Pencil and HB Staedtler Lead to rough in the cover as seen here!

Color steps-

Step 17 - In Photoshop CS3, using a Wacom Intuos Graphics Tablet - using the orange background as an "imprimatura" - my midtone/middle value -I lay in my initial color over the top of it - this helps unify/harmonize all the colors and does half the coloring for me. I use a big (200) random texture brush set between 40-60 % Normal to lay in this initial color with. I wanted this to look like a sketch on paper, so the texture brush gave it this feel. So a little bit of color over all the figure - extremely quick initial lay in - 5 minutes.

Step 18 - Now, switching over to the Pencil Tool at about 70% Normal, I start adding darker values (and red's) and lighter values (and yellows) to Coraline's flesh. Some of the darks are simply showing volume (rounding of the form) and some like the dark by her collar and her chest are cast shadows.

Step 19 - Still with the Pencil Tool at 80% Normal, I start adding more Light values (yellows) to Coralines dress and just adding some dark values ( reds) as well. I also lay in some color on the flowers in her hair, some light values to her hair and detail to her eyes and lips and necklace.

Step 20 - Continued pushing the light white areas (with the Pencil Tool between 80-90% Normal) to really make Coraline pop/emerge from the paper background - notably on the areas of her dress closest to the light source (which is basically the reader/us) and a couple of hot whites on left chest, her forehead, tip of nose, and bottom lip.

Also, use some reflective light/rim lighting on the right side of her hair for volume.

Still haven't touched the chair or the scarf since Step 17.

Coraline Step by Step Stage 4

Now, on to the digital half of this project.

Step 13 - I scan the drawing at 400 dpi grayscale and import into Photoshop CS3.

Step 14 - In photoshop, I've adjusted the "Levels", and cleaned up the line art using the Pencil tool at Normal 100% White and the Dodge tool at between 50 -100%.

Step 15 - Once I'm happy with the art, I go to Image>Adjustments>Threshold... and set at 131. I do this so I can help prevent losing any of the details of the pencils in the grayscale when I switch over to the bitmap version.

Then Image>Bitmap and now it's ready to go to color.

Step 16 - I "flat" the artwork ( you can read the DC Guide to Coloring Comics for the specific steps and how's and why's). I also scan in a piece of Canson Orange Pastel paper and use it for my background layer that I will later color on top of on another layer. I want this to look like a sketch so I use my standard convention drawing to do this art on ( the pastel paper). Ignore the blue swoop, that's Emma Frost's cape from the back cover - I colored both pieces together!

Coraline Step by Step Stage 3

Just about done with the drawing stage! Really polishing and cleaning up from here on out - very slight stuff but since I have scans of it, I'll try to show a little more of my process!

Step 9 - Hand and arm refining (and chair). More clothes tweaking. Moved Coraline's left breast a bit. Cleaned the chair a bit.

Step 10 -Nailed the face and hair. Looked at Mucha for an idea on how to do a real stylized flower in her hair. By finalizing her right hand on her face, I nail down that side of her head. Finalizing fabric and preparing her left hand and right arm for...

Step 11 - Drawing the scarf in, I had this in mind as a design element but wanted to wait until the hands and arms were nailed so I wouldn't waste time - whatever I put down for it wouldn't need to be redrawn later. This help finishes off the composition, gives movement to the piece and will tie into the wraparound Emma cover elements.

Step 12 - Final tightening in cleaning before I go in for the master scan! The pencil is down, next the computer!

Coraline Step by Step Stage 2

On to Stage 2 of the drawing.

Step 5 - At this point I couldn't make up my mind about what Coraline would be doing so I took out some tracing paper and drew out a couple of ideas including showing her holding an umbrella and also, I roughed in the dress because that FABRIC was going to be a HUGE part of the composition

Step 6 - And out of that, I decided on a whole new position for Coraline's right hand, which compliments the composition and focuses the viewer's eyes on her face. Also, based off that rough in of her dress on the tracing paper, I go ahead and draw her dress in AND I get the chair she is sitting nailed as I need to figure out where and how her arms are resting at!

Also, I've thinned down Coraline's face slightly, so it looks more like Coraline! Plus her right cheek is pushed out a hair to emphasize the smile muscles. AND a slight lowering of her right eyebrow to add a little more character to the expression.

Step 7 - A second thought, maybe I should move the left arm.

Step 8 - Nah! But I did figure out that the chair needed to be wider to help support her and the composition.

Also, I've a little more work on her upper body, just beginning to refine.

Coraline Step By Step Stage 1

This is the first stage of the creating this image of Coraline, which was used for the cover of Bombshells Book 1.

This is an unusual piece because from the beginning I know I will it for multiple purposes. It needs to a) be a front cover for the book, b) be part of a larger compostion that will tie the front cover (featuring this piece) to the back cover the book as a wraparound cover AND c) it needs to be able to hold it's own as a "solo" illustration used for prints.

Steps 1 and 2 - just me working in my sketchbook (Canson Universal Sketch 11" x 14") using colored pencils (Prismacolor Col Erase Light Blue, Blue, Orange, Purple and Scarlet red). I prefer to use colored pencils in my sketchbook as I use a grey pencil all the time while working and I feel this frees me up and not feel so much like work, plus I love color.

At this point I have a general idea of what I want in my head, but I need to play around with details on the paper to see what will look best. Interestingly enough, I had Coraline holding a beverage at this point! I try her with a hat, play with the tilt and turn of her head, etc.

After I'm comfortable what I'm going to draw I move to the full size piece.

Step 3 - now I begin the full size illustration ( on 13 x 19 2 ply 500 Series Strathmore rough finish Bristol Board) using a Prismacolor Col Erase Light Blue and a Staedtler HB lead and holder. I VERY quickly rough in the basic pose/compostion with the blue pencil, then go right into nailing what I like with the HB lead. I lucked out from the start with her face being exactly what I want - doesn't always happy. Generally when I'm happy with the face/expression I can just cruise and finish a drawing.

Step 4 - After sitting back and taking a look at the drawing, I switch Coraline from holding a glass to an umbrella, change her hairdo, and begin figuring out just how I want her legs crossed.

-Rachel and I will be appearing at the New York Comic Convention, October 8-10 in Artist's Alley.

- I will take sketch requests when I sit down Friday.

- Sketches are $200 each for a single figure. The convention isn't THAT long so I won't be able to get a lot of sketches done (and I'm going to be in New York City after all!) so don't get your hopes up - I will do as many as time allows.

San Diego 2010 REWIND Part Four - The View from the Booth

Ah, behind the booth at San Diego, it can be a lot of work sometimes and you are not able to see a lot of the other booths and exhibitors...
but it can be fun as well!
And the things you can see while sitting at your booth can be very entertaining, I saw these guys out on the floor and couldn't get a good pic of them, and then, while sitting at the booth, voila!
You also get to see stuff like this, especially on Saturday, the day of the Masquerade!
Outside, there is stuff like this, ah, San Diego, until next year!

Here's 5 sketches featuring Black Cat, a "fireman", a character from the online game "City of Heroes", the Baroness and Wonder Woman. I have also already posted 5 more previously.

I completed around 16 full sized commission sketches for the convention which was A LOT! I will most likely only do 10 next year as I ended up not seeing or doing much else in San Diego.

San Diego 2010 REWIND Part One - The Loot!

I spent most of the convention at my table as I had a new sketchbook myself and I kind of needed to be there in order to sell it! I ended up doing about 16 full size commissions like I have posted previously plus hundreds of head sketches. Fortunately, by sitting down at your booth - people come up to you! I ended up talking to all my editors from Marvel, Humanoids and former editors/colleauges ( plus pros, fans, dealers, associates, etc!)

Here's all the books I came back with - Clockwise from Top Left- Arthur Adams Colorsketchbook, The Rocketeer Artist's Edition, Humberto Ramo's New Sketchbook, Dean Yeagle's New Sketchbook, Francisco Herrera's New Sketchbook, Cheek's New Book, AH! New Sketchbook, 3 of Stephane Roux's Sketchbooks, Chris Sander's New Sketchbook, Tom Bancroft's New Sketchbook (this was sent to me after the show), Mark Schultz's New Sketchbook, Jim Cheung's New Sketchbook, Colin Wilson's Sketchbook, Arthur Adam's New Sketchbook and Frank Cho's New Sketchbook (and after looking at the pic, there are a few missing!).

I only bought two of the above books - The Rocketeer and the Chris Sander's one - everything else was given to me by either the artist or their rep - it's the only real advantage of sitting at your table the whole con! I did put in an order after the show to both Brandstudio Press and Stuart NG for all the stuff I missed out on!

I had never heard of Colin Wilson but he had picked up my sketchbook at the Bud Plant booth and so stopped by my booth and introduced himself and gave me a copy of his sketchbook. He's from New Zealand and has spent the last 15 years drawing some amazing comics in France!

I think my favorite sketchbook was the Chris Sanders one - I really adore his drawings.

In my little time out, Rachel and I shopped a bunch for gifts for family members (and I ended up getting two real cool t-shirts!). So I ended up not seeing much of the con, but a lot of the con came to me!

This is a unique sketch, featuring Supergirl, from SDCC 2010. It's drawn knowing there will be a 2nd commissioned figure put in at a later convention, Batgirl, who I roughed in quickly here. Fun setting yourself up like that for a challenge! Though I think this was the harder stage as the Batgirl will practically draw herself!

Ok so is how it works and I will use the past Chicago show as my example -

DAY 1 - So Friday, first day of the show runs from 1- 7PM. I get to my table at about 1:10 (I had to find it!) and there is a line of fans there already (which is very cool!). I set up my stuff, pull out my paper and start signing books and writing down names for my "Commission" sketch list (where I charge the individuals a price for a full sized rendered drawing). It takes about a half hour to get to everybody that has been standing there and I usually write down around 15-20 names and no one pays for their sketch until I'm done with it. Now for the next 5 1/2 of the show I'm signing books, selling artwork, talking with fans and pros, remembering how to socialize with multiple people at once (it's a skill and after 7+ months away from cons I'm a little rusty and end up with a banger of a headache by the end of the day) and when I have a second I begin my first "Commission" sketch. In addition to the "Commission" sketches I do "Free" sketches for almost anyone who asks and especially for those who bring me a hardcover book and I draw a free sketch regardless (as I figure anyone who has payed this much for a book must really like it and I thank them for their patronage with a sketch). These "Free" sketches are always done for the fan standing in front of me, like at an average French convention. Now, I don't leave my seat until 7 except to stand up and stretch. By 7PM, I've had enough time to rough in a figure and ink the head and part of the body of my 1st "Commission" (VOODOO).

DAY 2- Saturday I get up and decide I'd better get a few of the "Commissions" drawn before I head to the show as I will never get enough done this weekend otherwise. So after I eat breakfast, I finish the VOODOO from the previous day and I do 3 more "Commissions" ( EMMA1, MSMARVEL, EMMA2) before Rachel and I head out to see the Field Museum (before I need to be at the show). I get to the show around noon and and sign,sketch, etc until 2 where I have to go to the Marvel booth and sign from 2-3 which ends up being until 3:20 doing "Free" sketches. When I get to my table, the fan whose "Commission" I'm currently working on is leaving today so I really start cranking on it and manage to find a little time to finish it by 6PM. Once that is done, I start next "Commission", #6. And at this point, I've drawn about 100 of the "Free" sketches.

DAY 3-Sunday, I get 5.5 "Commissions" done before I head to the show at noon so I can relax and just sign and do "Free" sketches until I have to leave to catch my flight at 3PM. I do my final "Commission" as well, a head and shoulders shot on a Blank Cover.

So that is a fairly typical convention "Sketch" recap. It's a lot of work but I really enjoy drawing for people and it's great to meet and talk with the all fans and other pros!

PS- YANN - I will probably be doing something in France again, by next spring at the latest. I'm working on another exhibition for Galerie du 9ème art in Paris, so most likely there.

Here's a couple more of the sketches from Chicago. I had to leave the show early Sunday so I really cranked on these Saturday and Sunday morning so everyone would be able to pick up their sketches before I had to take off ( and everyone picked up their sketches up early Sunday, so I could relax a bit!).

These were done on 11 x 14 Canson Pastel Paper with a)Light Blue and HB Pencil, b)Pitt and Copic Multiliners Pens, c) Copic Cool Grey Markers and finally, d)Prismacolor White, Sand and Henna Pencils.

I got about 10.5 sketches done in Chicago, not too bad for such a short show. The first 4 sketches were done on the paper/sketchbooks given to me by their owner and the remainder I did on my 11 x 14" Canson Pastel paper.

Atlas #1 Cover - Final Colors

After I made a few tweaks, I wrapped up the colors for Atlas #1. Still not 100% happy, but time is up! This was a lot of fun to color. I will post up a step by step of how I got from the preview colors to this final version next week.

Colored on a Mac Pro with Photoshop CS3 and a Wacom Intuos Graphic Tablet in RGB @ 7" x 10.48" and 800 dpi.
